We WAS at the OSC Astronomy Festival

Many thanks to all the WAS team for your time and support during this weekends Festival.
Our thanks also to the many friends, colleagues and visitors that visited our stand over the weekend.

The weather was great and the sky the best it has been for a while. Photos from the weekend will appear here shortly for those of you that forwarded them to Keith. If you haven't yet, and don't mind them appearing here then forward them via email and we will put them on the Astronomy Festival Photo page.

Messgae of thanks from Sandra Voss @ OSC -

Hi Keith and the Wealden team,
The dust is settling and we are getting back to normal (whatever that is) after the festival. What a fantastic weekend we all had and the weather helped tremendously. It is looking like the best festival so far so overall a very successful weekend.
I would just like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you for all your help over the weekend. The festival would certainly not run as smoothly without all the volunteer help that we get. We have had so many comments about how friendly and helpful all the staff and volunteers were with the highest mark on the evaluation sheet you can get - one even went higher!!
Please pass on my thanks to all the Wealden members who did sterling work on the car park and entertaining the masses on those fabulously clear nights - I hope you all had a great time.
all the best

WAS at the OSC - Perseids Meteor Shower

The peak of the 2012 Perseids Meteor shower is finally here.

WAS members out on the lawn preparing their telescopes at the OSC last night,  ready for the event to begin.

The Perseids meteor shower occurs as Earth passes through the outskirts of a cloud of debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle. The dust and bits of rock left behind burn up if they enter the earth's atmosphere, leaving a bright stream. These burning streams are also known as shooting stars, with many producing bright green flashes as they streak across the night sky.

Welcome to Wealden AS

Wealden AS, formally Hastings and Battle Astronomical Society, have been volunteers at the Observatory Science centre Herstmonceux since 1994. We regularly meet at the Centre for our group meetings and help to support and promote astronomical activities during the Science Centre's open evenings.

  • A full list of society meetings  will be available shortly from the Wealden AS Meetings section.
  • A list of viewing evenings and special events we will be supporting at the Observatory Science Centre can be found in the Wealden AS Events section.
  • Membership information and copies of our society newsletter is available from our membership page. However only Wealden members will be able to access the newsletter.

In the meantime, please join us on Facebook where we have a group page with some of our photos and videos created by Society members.  You do not need to be a Facebook user to view the Wealden AS on Facebook page and please remember to add us too.
