OSC Event - International SUNday on 26th June 2016

Initiated by the Charlie Bates Solar Astronomy Project (CBSAP), we are hoping to celebrate with a sunny summer day. Come and join in the fun and take the opportunity to learn about the Sun and look at it safely through a solar telescope donated by Stephen Ramsden, founder of CBSAP. Other solar scopes will be available including those from Wealden Astronomy Society. Even if we don’t see the Sun you can still learn all about it! This is all offered at NO extra cost to your normal admission price.

Wealden A S Meeting on 11th June 2016 - Speaker Pr David Rothery

Planetary Geosciences and the Mercury mission

Professor David Rothery is a Senior Lecturer in the Open University Department of Earth Sciences, and the UK Lead Scientist on MIXS (Mercury Imaging X-ray Spectrometer), which is the only UK Principal Investigator instrument on BepiColombo, the European Space Agency mission to Mercury to be launched in 2017. Many questions remain for ESA’s BepiColombo to answer ten years from now, but thanks to NASA’s MESSENGER (orbiting Mercury March 2011-March 2015) we now know far more about the closest planet to the Sun than was possible from ground-based astronomy and the Mariner-10 flybys in the 1970s. David will be joining us to discuss new views of the Sun’s innermost planet.
